GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A virtual celebration honored civil and equal rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Saturday .
Mohammed Bey co-chairs the MLK Planning Committee, saying Dr. King knew what he was getting himself into before fighting for rights.
“He knew the amount of work, the energy that it took to help move things forward,” said Bey. “And he accepted the role of of being a messenger for a larger message.”
The Brown County committee hosted it’s 27th annual celebration Saturday.
Bey says the effort is continuously pulled off by people from different backgrounds and races. A message from Dr. King himself.
“To be able to chip away at time and human behavior, for me in a direction that is beneficial to all, is very positive,” said Bey. “And I think he would see that there is movement.”
As part of the celebrations students were interpreting this year’s theme – “The People’s March Continues.”
The message illustrated differently, from a K thru 12 contest, to performances by the Washington Fine Arts Choir.
Another celebration committee co-chair, Corey King, highlights what they hope is spread and made more accessible to all.
“Racial equality, gender equality, voting rights, just the opportunity to understand and respect people regardless of their walk of life.”
While noting progress made, committee members say there’s still work to do to bring Dr. King’s dream to life.
“The piece that challenges us is we have to continue to make progress,” said King. “That we can never get to a point that we believe we’re done or finished.”
The team pulling this celebration off, adds doing so means educating people on the past, to pave a way for the future.
