GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – The Green Bay Metro Fire Department ended the 2021 holiday season with six residential fires.
Between Nov. 25, 2021 and Jan. 1, 2022, the department hosted its annual Holiday Wreath Program.
At the start of the program, the wreath is green. For every residential or business fire during the holiday season, a red bulb is added.
It encourages residents to keep the wreath green and bring fire safety top of mind throughout the holiday season.
Here are some fire safety tips to remember and practice throughout this year:
Make sure you have working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors within the home.
Plan and practice an escape plan with everyone in the home, including children and pets.
Keep matches and lighters up high, out of reach of children. Use child safety locks on cabinets.
Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn and turn them off when you leave the room or go to bed.
Cooking appliances, most commonly a stove or range, are the leading cause of home fires in the United States.
Not surprisingly, they also rank number 1 for fire related injuries in the home. Almost all cooking fires could be prevented if you follow some simple safety measures:
Stay in the kitchen while cooking.
Use a timer to help remind you that you are cooking.
If a grease fire should happen to art on the stove, turn the burner off and place a lid or cookie sheet over the burning pan. DO NOT move the pan.
Last year, the department had four red bulbs.
