GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — We’re beginning to see the impact winter weather is having on the roads.
Green Bay Public Works Director Steve Grenier says there’s concern that precipitation over the next few days could cause issues.
“We may have a wintry mix, and that causes concern because there’s only so much we can do with that,” Grenier told WTAQ. “We’re going to go out and prep, but the brine on the road gets dissipated very, very quickly when we get rain as opposed to snow.”
That rain then freezes, turning into ice overnight, which can’t be plowed.
“I can’t just keep going out there to throw salt at it, because all that rain does is dissolves the salt which runs down the storm sewer and ends up out in the bay,” said Grenier.
That can cause environmental problems.
While on the roads, Grenier asks drivers to stay alert.
“The folks who are operating snowplows have a lot to keep tabs on,” Grenier explained. “What they really don’t need is another variable added to the mix in the form of a vehicle or a pedestrian.”
He says don’t attempt to pass snowplows and stay far behind them.
