TOWN OF LIBERTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Two people were taken to the hospital after falling into a Manitowoc County lake Monday morning.
Sheriff’s officials say rescue crews were called to Pigeon Lake in the town of Liberty just before noon. Rescuers determined a 31-year-old woman from Chicago was following her dogs who had run onto the ice. She and the dogs then fell through the ice.
A 32-year-old New Holstein man then tried to rescue them using a kayak. He ended up in the water as well.
Both the man and the woman were able to get themselves out of the water and onto the ice. Rescue crews then arrived and pulled them off the lake.
The dogs were able to get to shore. A good Samaritan was credited with keeping the animals safe afterward.
Sheriff’s officials remind people to check local conditions before going out onto any ice.
