GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Students at Green Bay Preble High School entered class a little differently than usual on Monday.
Enhanced security procedures were in place after three threats against the school last week, on top of another, less specific threat against schools across the nation.
“We had some changes to the normal entry process,” Superintendent Stephen Murley tells WTAQ. “Only having two doors open, asking kids not to bring their normal large backpacks and instead providing them access to some string bags.”
He said the process was more like going to the airport.
“It actually went pretty smooth…the line was a little big longer because you had to go through two doors instead of the normal doors that were open,” Murley explained.
School administrators will discuss whether or not the enhanced procedures will stay in place when school returns from winter break on January 3rd.
“We get through that winter break and whether or not we have any enhanced protocols in place, we have some time to figure that out,” said Murley.
They may also discuss expanding the protocols to other schools. On the same day of the enhanced procedures at Preble, a student at Green Bay East High School brought a gun to campus.
“Trying to understand why kids are carrying weapons around in today’s society,” said Murley. “That’s something I may not be able to answer for you.”
Police investigated and determined there was no intention to harm students or staff members but Murley added that it was not an accident.
