GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Officials are asking residents to be prepared for wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour.
Randy Asman, a traffic engineer with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation says the potential wind gusts are an abnormal occurrence for this time of year.
Asman said, “People need to pay attention to the vehicle that they’re driving and ultimately do they need to drive?”
Asman says the DOT is keeping a close eye on the Leo Frigo Bridge.
“A wind advisory we’re just trying to advise people, hey there’s high winds, reduce your speed, and be careful right? If we get into the wind warning situation and we have a gust of 58 miles an hour or more the bridge will be closed,” Asman said.
The DOT uses weather sensor data on the bridge and around Green Bay to understand the winds and to predict what winds could come.
Green Bay Public Works is advising residents to hold off taking out your garbage or recycling carts until the winds die down.
“We are going to have a limited number of staff that’s going to go out, they’re going to try and run in ahead of the collection vehicles, not easy to do because we have 16 collection vehicles out everyday but if we’ve got carts that are tipped over we are going to try and get the carts upright again so the truck can tip,” City of Green Bay Public Works director Steve Grenier said.
Grenier says people should also keep an eye out for down traffic signals and potential debris.
Public Works also wants to remind residents that if your garbage or recycling cart tips and there’s a spill, it is not the city’s responsibility to pick that up.
It is on the resident to pick up the spill.
