DOOR COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – For those planning a trip to a state park or forest in Wisconsin, vehicle admission stickers are now on sale.
A biting wind and fresh coat of snow set the stage for winter time activities at Potawatomi State Park.
“We have a portion of the Niagara Escarpment in the park, which is a geologic formation that forms a bluff in the park. We also have the eastern terminus of the Ice Age Trail,” said Erin Brown Stender, Potawatomi State Park Superintendent.
Brown Stender tells FOX 11 state park stickers went on sale November 26.
“Admission stickers are valid from the date of purchase. So, if you buy one now, it’s good for the rest of this year, and all of next year.”
Park leaders say there are about 250,000 visits annually to Potawatomi, and they say the pandemic pushed more people outside in 2020. They say last year, attendance rose at the park by about 21 percent. They say this season, those numbers remain strong.
“Lots of people still coming out and using our state parks this year. We actually saw an increase in camping this year. So camping was very popular in 2020, continued to be popular in 2021,” said Brown Stender.
Officials say in addition to camping other visits are popular too. Visitors say paying $28 dollars for a sticker is a bargain.
“I go to other states, Colorado, I have a son out there, and theirs is over $160 or something for a year. So this is a huge deal, yes,” said Carol Mulinix, Sturgeon Bay.
“I agree that they’re a good deal, because they’re like 20 some dollars, I think, and it doesn’t take much to come out here, where they pay for themselves basically,” said Jolene Wilson, Sturgeon Bay.
According to the Department of Natural Resources, more there are more than 17 million visits to the state park system each year.
