WEYAUWEGA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Weyauwega-Fremont School District is closed Wednesday after images of a student with a handgun surfaced, district administrators say. One person has been arrested.
District Administrator Phillip Tubbs explained in the first of two letters to parents that a note with threatening images was found by students in a classroom. The note was not specific to a person or building.
Fox 11 received these letters in an email from a viewer:
You can read the first letter here:
Dear District Families,
I want to thank you for the continued support to our District.
The purpose of this all district communication is to fill you in on a situation that occurred today in the high school:
A note was discovered by several students in a classroom. The note had threatening images non-specific to any person or school building. Administration has been working closely with local Law Enforcement to investigate this matter. The School District takes every threat very seriously. Student and staff safety is our number one priority. After analyzing the threat, the district is planning on increasing our safety measures for tomorrow. Therefore, on Wednesday, December 8th we will have an increase of Police presence at the Weyauwega campus. Random backpack searches may occur as students enter the school building.
As a parent, you have the choice to keep your child/children home tomorrow if you do not feel it is safe for your child. Please make sure you contact the office secretary. Please feel free to reach out to the district with any information regarding this situation.
Sincerely,
Phillip Tubbs
Tubbs explained in the second letter the decision to cancel classes Wednesday (December 8) was due to new developments unrelated to the earlier threat.
School will resume Thursday with an increased police presence.
You can read the second letter here:
Dear District Families,
The purpose of this email is to notify you that the Weyauwega-Fremont School District will be closed tomorrow. No school for students or staff. Recently, we have had more concerns brought to our attention, we believe these new developments are not related to the earlier non-specific threat that was received today. However, like I pointed our in my earlier coorespondence, we do not take these situations lightly and want to make sure that our school is safe.
The current plan is to have school resume with increased Law Enforcement presence on Thursday, December 9th. I want to thank all the parents that have been proactive to help with the current situation. Also, you will still have the choice to send your children to school on Thursday or keep them home.
Thanks again for all your support.
Phillip Tubbs
Tubbs did not release details on the person who was arrested.
