NEENAH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Neenah Mayor Dean Kaufert says he will not be running for re-election next spring.
He says that stress from the pandemic has drained him emotionally and physically, which caused him to retire from public office.
Kaufert was a state legislator assemblyman for 24 years and has been Neenah mayor since 2014. He says he’s ready to make more time for his family.
“I’ve been doing this a long time,” Kaufert said. “I’ve had the luxury of doing both the state and local government, and that’s pretty unique, especially the way I did it. Many people do it the other way around, but you saw the reason behind me, the kids and the baseball games that I’ve missed, the football games that grandpa’s missed. It’s time to give back something to them.”
Kaufert says his goal was to make a difference in the community and state and to leave Neenah in a better position that when he got there.
