FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Funeral services have been scheduled for the Fond du Lac police officer who died as a result of complications from COVID-19.
Visitation for Officer Joseph Kurer, 26, will be held for his relatives, friends, and fellow officers at Holy Family Catholic Church in Fond du Lac on Tuesday, according to an obituary. Visitation will continue on Wednesday morning with a mass to follow. The obituary says Kurer will be laid to rest in a private burial service.
Kurer joined the department in 2018. He served on the department’s Tactical Field Force Team, Honor Guard Unit, Domestic Violence Intervention Team and was certified as a Field Training Officer earlier this year.
In addition, Kurer was an Aviation Operations Noncommissioned Officer with the United States Army, Wisconsin National Guard. Prior to joining Fond du Lac police, he served as a community service officer with the City of West Bend Police Department, according to the release.
Kurer earned multiple honors, including the City of Fond du Lac Police Department Life Saving Award, Army Commendation Medal and Army Achievement Medal.
A law enforcement procession escorted Kurer from the hospital to the funeral home late Wednesday night.
Kurer is survived by his wife and two children, his parents and a sister. One of his children was born the night before he died.
The police department declined to answer whether Kurer was vaccinated against COVID-19.
A memorial fund has been established to benefit Kurer’s children.
