FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A memorial fund has been established to help the family of a Fond du Lac police officer who died in the line of duty.
Police say officer Joseph Kurer contracted COVID-19 while on duty and passed away on Wednesday due to complications from the virus.
A procession was held Wednesday night.
Officer Kurer, 26, left behind a wife and two children. His second child, born the night before he died.
In a statement released Thursday, the department said it would not provide details on specific employees’ medical conditions or vaccination status out of respect for their privacy and their family’s privacy.
Chief Aaron Goldstein wrote:
Our entire Department mourns with the Kurer family at this unbelievably difficult time. I truly believe that the last thing any of us want to do is unintentionally add to the pain of losing Joseph. The Kurer family has asked me to convey their request for privacy at this time, and to ask the media to send any inquiries to the Department rather than the family. We need to make every effort to show respect for the family’s needs and allow them to mourn in private.
A memorial fund is set at National Exchange Bank for Kurer’s children. Donations can be dropped off at any National Exchange Bank branch. Checks should be written to: Joseph Kurer Memorial Fund. Donations can also be made through this official GoFundMe account.
Kurer is the second law enforcement officer in Wisconsin to die in the line of duty from COVID-19.
