Remember to apply for an Upriver Lakes license by August 1st for a chance to be one of 500 people selected to spear a sturgeon from Lakes Poygan, Winneconne, or Butte des Morts during the 2022 sturgeon spearing season, which kicks off on February 12th, 2022, and runs until any of the harvest caps are reached or until the season officially ends after 16 days.
Due to a higher success rate on the Upriver Lakes, licenses for the Upriver Lakes are limited to 500 each season and issued through a preference point system. Those who wish to receive a license have to apply by the deadline. Applicants will either successfully be granted a 2022 Upriver Lakes spearing license or a preference point that can be retained into future years.
Licenses are given to those with the most preference points until all have been given out. Applicants can also purchase a preference point if they just want to get a preference point and not be considered for a license for the upcoming season.
As far as Lake Winnebago licenses go, there’s an unlimited number available for spearers and they can be purchased until October 31st. Just remember, applicants authorized for an Upriver Lakes license aren’t allowed to buy a license for Lake Winnebago.
