GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The man accused of robbing a Green Bay drugstore at gunpoint told police he did it because he had a drug and alcohol problem, prosecutors say.
Sifredo Ernesto Gomez, 29, is charged with armed robbery, intimidation of a victim and bail jumping, all as a repeat offender.
Police say just before 2:30 a.m. Monday, they were called to Walgreens, 116 N. Military Ave., for a report of an armed robbery. The clerk told officers a man had walked into the store, pointed a gun at her and took money from the cash register. It was estimated $788 was missing.
While police were searching for the robber, they found the gun, which turned out to be a BB gun.
An officer who had encountered Gomez at St. John’s Homeless Shelter in the past recognized him from Walgreens surveillance video. That afternoon, officers were called to Jackson Square Park in downtown Green Bay for a report of a man threatening someone with a machete. Officers recognizes Gomez and arrested him.
During questioning, the criminal complaint says Gomez admitted stealing the gun at a different store, then robbing Walgreens.
“Sifredo stated he was very sorry for committing this armed robbery, he has a bad drug and alcohol problem, and that’s why he did it,” the complaint says.
