GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Green Bay’s Police Department has reactivated their Violent Crime Suppression Task Force in response to a massive uptick in shots-fired calls in the area this year.
Green Bay has seen more than double the shots fired calls they saw this time last year.
“Year to date we’ve had 27 shots fired incidents in the city of Green Bay which is very alarming,” said Police Commander Kevin Warych. “This trend has to stop.”
At this time in 2020, there were nine shots fired calls. The year before it was eight.
Last year, the task force looked into an increase of shootings among two groups of feuding residents. It’s not clear if the same group is responsible for the uptick this year.
“There are some familiar names associated to some of the shots fired calls were seeing,” said Warych. “But… this year it’s too early to tell.”
The task force consists of two officers working full time with a team of investigators to try to get ahead of the violence by working with community leaders and gathering intel.
