LUXEMBURG, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Luxemburg-Casco’s school board voted in a special board meeting this week to make masking optional, and no longer require quarantines or social distancing.
As it stands right now, a school day at the Luxemburg-Casco District looks just like it did before COVID-19 came along. The agenda for Wednesday’s night board meeting called to revise the COVID related restrictions.
It originally came about as the district started to see an increase in COVID-19 cases as well as close contacts.
According to the district’s COVID-19 dashboard, as of Thursday, there are 14 positive cases among students and 62 close contacts. That’s in a district of about 1,900 total students.
Some parents– who declined to go on camera with FOX 11–support the school board’s decision.
But one parent who spoke with FOX 11 believes this was the wrong time to loosen restrictions.
“You look at a school board they’re kind of near the front of the community, people kind of take them under advisement and when you imply the school can be completely opened now with none of these guidelines needed it gives a false sense of security on the guidelines for the rest of the community,” said Nathan Gilson.
Gilson has two students in the LC District.
“I fear with everyone’s guard coming down that it’s going to start spreading more rapidly to the community and really effect those who are most vulnerable to this disease,” said Gilson.
The district’s superintendent, Glenn Schlender, declined an interview on camera, but did say….
“Still working the details of the board’s decision. We (the board and administration) may be meeting in the near future to address this.”
