WASHINGTON, DC (WSAU) — It’s still unknown if US Senator Ron Johnson will seek re-election, but if he does he has the backing of a current Republican party heavyweight.
Former President Donald Trump has given his support for Wisconsin’s Senior Senator, saying “Even though he has not yet announced that he is running, and I certainly hope he does, I am giving my Complete and Total Endorsement to Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin.”
Trump issued the statement through the Save America Politica Action Committee (PAC). He remains banned from most of the major social media platforms including Facebook and Twitter.
“He is brave, he is bold, he loves our Country, our Military, and our Vets. He will protect our Second Amendment and everything else we stand for,” Trump added. “It is the kind of courage we need in the U.S. Senate. He has no idea how popular he is. Run, Ron, Run!”
Johnson has previously indicated that he would not run for a third term in the Senate. In a text message to an Associated Press reporter he said he appreciates Trump’s support but he remains mum on his future plans.
Johnson’s seat is up for election in 2022. At least three Democrats including Outagamie County Executive Tom Nelson, Milwaukee Bucks Senior Vice President Alex Lasry, and Marshfield radiologist Gillian Battino have announced their intentions of running for the seat.
