SHIOCTON, WI (WTAQ) — The sturgeon will begin spawning on the Lake Winnebago system…soon.
There’s no way to tell precisely when the sturgeon will begin swimming upstream to spawn. It happens when the water temperature hits around 53 degrees.
Aaron O’Connell is a sturgeon biologist with the DNR.
“So we’re thinking that the upper Fox sturgeon spawning run will probably begin here in the next couple of days,” O’Connell told WTAQ. “And then on the Wolf River, likely by the weekend.”
O’Connell says the sturgeon population in the system is healthy, meaning the spawning run, which usually draws onlookers, is likely to be quite the show.
“If you haven’t seen it before, it is likely one of the most impressive things you will see,” O’Connell said. “It is just incredible. It’s masses of fish splashing and spawning feet away from you. It’s a spectacular thing to witness.”
The Wolf River Sturgeon Trail in New London and the Bamboo Bend in Shiocton are both prime locations for Sturgeon-watching during the spawn.
