WAUPACA CO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Weyauwega-Fremont School District approved to change their high school mascot name to the Warhawks.
The approval came in Monday night’s Board of Education meeting.
The high school’s previous mascot name was the Indians.
It is unclear when the name change will take effect.
After a Committee of the Whole meeting back on November 9, 2020, a Google form was posted to the school district’s website and Facebook for community members to start giving mascot suggestions.
The district then formed a committee to go through data to bring back eight to 10 suggestions for the board to then condense down to a final three to five names.
The district then chose four final suggestions: the Warhawks, Hawks, Red Hawks and River Hawks.
A second community vote occurred amongst the final four in which 933 votes were compiled, according to the district.
