GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Many people ripped into their Christmas presents this week to find things they’ve always wanted. But sometimes, those shirts and socks might be the wrong color or size.
But if you’re returning or exchanging something for a different size or color, you need to act quickly.
“Do it in a timely fashion because stores have different return policies and some of them only accept returns during a specific time period,” said Susan Bach of the Better Business Bureau. “Especially if you’re trying to exchange it for a different size or color, the best selection will only be available early after Christmas.”
Wisconsin law doesn’t mandate stores to return items at all, unless they’re defective or not as advertised. But most will comply, at least for awhile.
“Most retailers will return items because they want to keep you as a customer but they’re not required to do so you want to make it as easy for them as possible,” Bach said.
There are a number of ways to make returns easier on the retailer. Being prepared and having everything ready to go before you get to the store is usually best practice.
“Make sure that you keep the item in its original packaging, that’s important to stores who are receiving your return,” Bach told WTAQ News. “Bring your ID to the store as well because that is sometimes required by a lot of retailers.”
However, this year especially, many people went online to get their gifts. Returning items to a shop that isn’t brick-and-mortar can be a bit confusing if you haven’t done it before.
“Do your research before you start paying for return postage and things like that because every online sellers return policies are different,” Bach said. “I know a lot of Amazon returns can now be accepted at Kohl’s as well so that’s something for people to consider as well.”
