MADISON, WI (WSAU) — A Madison-based F-16 fighter jet crashed Tuesday evening in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula during a routine drill, and officials say the pilot of the jet remains missing.
The jet was part of the 116th Fighter Wing which is based out of Truax Air National Guard Base in Madison.
Very few details about the incident have been released including what may have led to the crash, the status of the pilot, and if anyone on the ground was hurt.
The crash occurred in Delta County, MI. The 115th Fighter Wing is assisting in the search efforts along with the Coast Guard and other local authorities.
Governor Tony Evers released a statement Wednesday morning saying “I was devastated to learn last night that a member of the Wisconsin Air National Guard was involved in an F-16 crash in the Upper Peninsula. As search and rescue operations continue, Kathy and I are hoping and praying for the pilot’s safe return. Our hearts go out to [the] pilot’s family as well as the members of the 115th Fighter Wing as they continue working to bring the pilot home.”
