DOOR COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The opportunity to enter state properties continues, as the annual park stickers are now on sale.
From a picturesque peek at the Sturgeon Bay Shipping Channel, to a panoramic vista of the waters nearby, Potawatomi State Park offers something for just about anyone.
Taylor Williamson likes to hit the trails. She and her dogs Chief and Max did some hiking Thursday morning.
“The trail system. They keep them very clean. Everyone’s super nice when you see them. Just stop and wave hi. The masking, they’ve kept their social distancing. Everything is very good with that as well,” said Taylor Williamson, Green Bay.
Williamson is one of about a quarter of a million annual visitors to Potawatomi.
Park Superintendent Erin Brown Stender says the pandemic has pushed more people outdoors, and through the end of November, attendance at the park is up about 21 percent compared to the same time last year.
“I think they’re very popular. A lot of people kind of had their first experience maybe in state parks during 2020, and want to continue that into 2021,” said Erin Brown Stender, Potawatomi State Park Superintendent.
The annual state park stickers went on sale December 1. The cost for a vehicle with Wisconsin license plates is $28.
“They’re good at all Wisconsin state parks, state forests, and state recreation areas,” said Brown Stender.
Taylor Williamson says she’s sold.
“This is my first year that I’ve bought a sticker from Wisconsin. We’ve had them from Michigan, but since I live here, and I have some time off, I can actually go exploring, and I will definitely be doing it again for 2021,” she said.
According to the Department of Natural Resources, there more than 17 million visits to the state park system each year.
