GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The UW system partnered with the U.S. Department of Health to open COVID-19 surge-testing sites at campuses across Wisconsin.
Tests are open to the public and results are available within 15 minutes.
UW-Green Bay opens their surge-testing site on Monday.
“Community members can come on campus and register online for an appointment, come filter through, get a test taken, and then within 15 minutes they can get that result,” UWGB interim chancellor Sheryl Van Gruensven said.
The U.S. Department of Health will fund the testing. The site will primarily utilize antigen testing.
“So they’re quick, and they’re good, if they find somebody who’s positive, that’s great because then we can confirm that and contact trace and isolate that person,” Prevea Health CEO and President Dr. Ashok Rai said.
Dr. Rai tells FOX 11 one of the only tools we have in the fight against COVID-19 is testing.
“We have human behavior which we want people to physically distance, and to wear a mask, but on the medical side, a tool we have about limiting the spread is testing.”
He says the more people that get tested, the better.
Van Gruensven tells FOX 11 people under 30, who are less likely to be symptomatic, need to take advantage of the site.
“Individuals who may be mingling more in the community or don’t have symptoms who are unknowingly spreading the virus.”
“That’s what we’re trying to prevent is the spread to the most vulnerable people and even younger people get sick too so the earlier we can find it we can monitor them as well,” Dr. Rai said.
The site has about 12,000 tests available.
“We’re thinking that maybe will last about 4 to 6 weeks. If there’s a high demand maybe down the road there’s an opportunity to get some more tests,” Van Gruensven said.
