Green Bay Area Public Schools wants the community to know one thing.
Deputy Superintendent Vicki Bayer said, “it’s a great opportunity but to do it right we really need everyone working in the same direction to get us off on the right foot number one.”
Teachers have been preparing for their students to learn mostly online. According to Bayer, all teachers are updated on training as well as best practices to keep students engaged during an online school day.
“All staff will be engaged on social and emotional learning and relationship building. This is going to help support our advisory circles. They will also be taking trauma and its impact on behavior training.”
And that typical day for a student in a virtual model was also detailed Each day will include a homeroom. Students will have their teachers on Monday, Tuesday Thursday and Friday. They’ll be mostly on their own on Wednesdays.
“We all share the concern about a student staring at a computer for hours,” said Bayer, “all new lessons will be recorded for those students for whatever reason might not be able to log in at that particular time when a course begins.”
The board also discussed altering the gating criteria for in-person learning to start. Originally, the school board wanted a two-week period where positive test rates for the state dropped below 5%. Administrators are now waiting for new guidelines from Wisconsin Health Services.
They potentially will consider criteria based off the levels of burden, community spread, and trajectory of COVID-19. It will be assessed on a scale from high to low risk.
Superintendent Stephen Murley said, “once the board makes that determination where those break points are then the administrative team will develop what the transition model will be for those.”
The board plans to meet after the release of DHS guidelines to update their gating criteria.
The board also talked about having some classes, like science labs, take place in-person.
