MARINETTE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Republicans gathered at a Team Trump event in Marinette on Saturday morning.
State Rep. John Nygren tells FOX 11 Republicans are ready to fight Governor Tony Evers’ statewide mask order.
“The Senate has already expressed an opinion that they believe it should be thrown out.”
The mask mandate went into effect Saturday… but Nygren says the issue isn’t about the face coverings themselves.
“The interpretation comes down to is it about the mask mandate or is it about the overstep of government. Is it constitutional for government to say you must do this?”
Congressman Mike Gallagher tells FOX 11 he’s a proponent of wearing masks; but, he criticizes Evers’ order as a one size fits all approach.
“What works in Madison and Milwaukee is going to be different than what works in Green Bay or Appleton. Let alone Peshtigo, Door County and counties where we have more cows than people in Wisconsin.”
The chair of the Marinette County Democratic Party disagrees.
“Take it seriously. This is not something that is being done to infringe on someone else’s rights,” Tom Faller said. “Rather, it is being done to try to curb a spread that as you have seen has not actually gone down.”
And in the middle, Republican State Rep. Jeff Mursau says he doesn’t know if he’s for or against it.
“If that’s going to help things to get us back to normal, I’m going to do whatever I have to do and try to keep people safe.”
The Republican lawmakers say there isn’t a date yet for when the legislature might convene to try to overturn the mandate. However, they said they expect it to happen soon.
