GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – From technology to food, Green Bay School Superintendent Stephen Murley tells FOX 11 the district is trying to make learning from home as close to normal as possible.
The district recently released their proposed models of learning for the 2020-2021 school year.
“We have a safety net in place to provide support for all children,” said Murley. “They’ve been really detailed in planning how to make the environment engaging so kids want to come to school online and I think folks will find it is very different experience this year than last March.”
The off-site learning experience starts with the technology.
Green Bay public schools plans to give age appropriate devices to all 21,000 students.
Murley says internet hot spots will also be given to any child who needs one.
“Through that process we can make sure kids have the hardware they need, and just as important so they have the ability to connect that hardware to a system and they can really take advantage of that learning program.”
Online learning doesn’t mean staring at a screen for eight hours. Students will get assignments, and check-in with their teachers.
“Their day will look different then when they came to school last fall,” said Murley, “but at the same time we’ve got a way for our staff to deliver that content that will meet the kids needs and not keep them glued to the chair for an 8 hour stint.
No school day is complete without lunch. Meals can be picked up or delivered for students who are at home. They’ll eat in their classrooms when they’re back at school.
“I always said one of the hardest things in my career is to make have a snow day because that means some kids may not eat,” said Murley, “but this is an exponential snow day and we’re making sure our kids do eat.
As for switching between the off-site, on-site, and hybrid learning models during the year, Murley says don’t expect those changes to happen overnight.
“They will gradually ease back into that overtime and finally get back to that on-site learning mode where we have all students in all day everyday.”
The Green Bay School Board meets in a special meeting Monday night to approve a plan to start the school year.
