STURGEON BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is adding Wisconsin to the city’s quarantine travel order.
It means travelers will have to quarantine when they return to the city from the Badger State.
The order could mean less business for Kenny Albert, who manages Sonny’s Pizza in Sturgeon Bay, a hot spot for tourists.
“The majority of our customers are tourists from Chicago and Illinois,” Albert said. “It’s kind of detriment to the business and the community as a whole because we rely on those people.”
While the order is meant to mitigate spread of COVID-19, Albert tells FOX 11….
“The area of Door County is so big that you can really find space and time and go hiking, you can swim and boat, kayak,. There’s so much to do that you’re not necessarily around a lot of other people.
The order won’t go into effect until this Friday, which means Door County’s visitor’s bureau won’t know the orders impact for some time yet. It’s why bureau leaders tell me they will keep working with public health officials to keep people safe.
“Certainly, one of the key economic pillars of our economy,” said Jon Jarosh, the bureau’s director of communication.
He tells FOX 11 it could be months until the bureau understands the orders impact.
“And what sort of an impact a myriad of things may or may not have had an impact on Door County tourism.”
It’s why he has this advice in the meantime.
“Wash your hands, wear a mask and practice physical distancing while you’re here regardless of where you’re from.”
As for businesses like Albert’s, who have already upped their cleaning and sanitation, he says they’re going to keep on doing what they’ve been doing.
“We’re going to continue to do that if COVID is here for five years, ten years, for the rest of our life. We’re going to make sure everybody is safe.”
