OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A third party candidate for the US Presidency made her way to Oshkosh over the weekend.
Less government and more freedom… that was the vibe at Oshkosh’s Leach Amphitheater on Saturday.
“Enough politicians. Enough of the same stuff that we’ve been getting from the establishment politicians, republicans, democrats, they’re both the same,” Diane Bast said. “Vote Libertarian.”
The Libertarian Party’s presidential nominee was in Oshkosh on Saturday, rallying her supporters.
“I really love her message of removing all of these government regulations and stuff that really restricts what we can do as people,” Mikhail Ronnander said.
Dr. Jo Jorgenson needs 2,000 signatures on a petition to get her name on the ballot. But COVID-19 has made less people willing to touch the campaign’s clipboards, or even answer the door.
Despite the pandemic, not everyone in Saturday’s crowd was wearing face coverings either.
“This pandemic is over. I mean look at the death rates. Death rate goes down down down, it’s almost zero up here in northern Wisconsin. There is no COVID-19… so no masks,” Joe Bast said.
In 2016, the Libertarian party earned about 3.6% of Wisconsin’s vote. Donald Trump brought in about 47% while Hillary Clinton had about 46% in our purple state.
I asked Jorgensen why she’s running for President if she likely can’t win.
“Well, first of all, a lot of people are saying that yes they do want a choice. And, secondly, we can get the ideas out there. So I am running to win,”Jorgensen replied. “However, if nothing else, we can change the conversation, we can move in that direction. And I’m here to also help state and local candidates as well. So we’ve got to start a movement somewhere.”
Jorgensen hopes this stop will do that for her in Wisconsin.
