CINCINNATI, OH (WSAU) – Pick N Save stores across Wisconsin will no longer deal with coins as the nation continues to deal with a shortage of change circulating through the Federal Reserve System.
Kruger Stores, which operates Pick N Save, says customers who pay with cash will only be given their whole dollars back. Any cents due will be added to their frequent shopper card and will be deducted from the bill due on their next visit.
According to a Federal Reserve news release from mid-June, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the normal circulation patter of coins. Once portions of the economy began to slowly re-open, there wasn’t enough coin in the system to keep up.
Federal Reserve officials add that they are taking measures to solve the issue but it will be a while before those impacts are felt by businesses.
Other chains such as Kwik Trip and Holiday have sent customers emails and posted signs near registers to encourage payment by debit/credit card, rewards card, or exact change.
