MADISON, WI (Wisconsin Radio Network) – Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway has apologized to the community after a video she made for the city’s police officers was shared on social media.
The mayor expressed gratitude to cops for their work during looting and break-ins of downtown businesses more than a week ago. In the recording, she said: “I was so focused on addressing the needs of our community, that I didn’t remember that you need and deserve both recognition and appreciation.”
The mayor recorded that thank-you on June 3rd, but after it was shared on Facebook Tuesday night, the resulting blow back from activists had her quickly out with a second message: “Black lives matter. I believe this deeply. And yet I failed to center this message, in my message to the police department.”
Rhodes-Conway said she “may have permanently lost any trust I may have had” but remains “deeply committed to advancing the work of equitable systems change.”
