GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – With help from 125 Wisconsin National Guard members, Green Bay was able to avoid a repeat of what it saw overnight Sunday into Monday.
Guard members were set to protect essential infrastructure like the police department, courthouse, and city hall while the curfew was in effect from 9 p.m Monday until 6 a.m Tuesday.
That allowed Green Bay Police to be out in the city to make sure everyone was following the curfew.
Police say they arrested five people near the intersection of Walnut and Washington for being in violation of the curfew.
“They were being boisterous on the corner there. That’s fine. You can protest all you want until 9 o’clock,” said Chief Andrew Smith of the Green Bay Police Department.
“Once 9 o’clock ticks by, then you are in violation with the new curfew law that we have here in Green Bay. Once you’re in violation of that, you’re subject to arrest. They were given warnings, did not respond as we requested and so they were detained and ultimately are going to be cited, hopefully released later tonight.”
One of the protesters who was not arrested tells FOX 11 he plans to follow the new rule.
“I understand it after last night,” said Adam Poquette, of Green Bay.
“Unfortunately, there were some bad seeds that tore up the city a little bit, but the group we’re out here with right now, we’re doing the right thing. We’re not being violent, we’re just trying to get our voices heard.”
The curfew will be in effect again Tuesday starting at 9 p.m. and ending at 6 a.m. Wednesday.
The National Guard members will be back out during that time as well, according to Chief Smith.
The curfew pertains to groups of people. People will not be pulled over or arrested if they are going to work or doing other lawful activity.
