GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – The demonstrations across the country, sparked by the death of a black man, George Floyd, in Minneapolis police custody earlier this week, comes to northeast Wisconsin.
People marched across the Walnut Street Bridge and through streets in downtown Green Bay tonight (Saturday).
The group started on the CityDeck and walked in the middle of Walnut Street, stopping briefly in the intersection of Walnut and Washington Streets, before heading to the Green Bay Police Department on Adams Street.
At about 7 o’clock, a group of protesters started marching from the east side of the Mason Street bridge to the west side, blocking traffic in the eastbound lanes.
A peaceful protest is also scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m. starting near the Walnut Street Bridge.
Another protest march took place in downtown Appleton, with a rally scheduled for 5 p.m. Sunday at Houdini Plaza.
Meanwhile, people in Madison were told to avoid State Street as police continue to try to clear demonstrators who they say have turned violent.
The protests started at the State Capitol and eventually many of the participants ended up on State Street.
In a statement, Madison Police says at about 4:30 p.m. the demonstrated ended at the Capitol, and a group of around 150 people remained in the area and started damaging property.
Police say the group damaged vehicles and broke windows as they moved into the State Street area. Officers say the protesters tried to break into a jewelry store, and other looting took place.
Tear gas was used to try to move the crowd, according to police. They say some people started throwing rocks and chairs at officers.
