DE PERE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Saturday was a special day for five area high school seniors.
They graduated from the Wisconsin Army Cadets program in ceremony Saturday morning at Voyageur Park.
The program serves as an exploratory opportunity for young adults to learn about the military, and gain leadership and survival skills.
Three of the five students also received an award from the Ben Jackson Foundation, which helps provide money to military members so they can go home once stationed and visit family.
One of the officers is grateful it still happened, after not having seen the cadets since March.
Larry Jackson, the president of the Ben Jackson Foundation, tells FOX 11…
“The military doesn’t pay for people to come home on leave, that’s where we help provide cash to make sure that cost is never a factor as to why they don’t make that visit home.”
Corinne Youngquist, the Wisconsin Army Cadets public affairs officer tells FOX 11…
“We weren’t sure this was going to happen. And this is the best. This is an opportunity for us to say goodbye to them.”
The program celebrated another milestone.
This is the first time the Wisconsin Army Cadets’ graduating class had all its members enlist in the military, with two going into the Army, one to the Marines, one to the Air Force, and one will be attending West Point Academy.
