GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Green Bay’s Police Chief is weighing in on the death of a black man in police custody in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
On Facebook, Police Chief Andrew Smith called the death of George Floyd a “tragic incident” and “devastating”, saying such incidents erode trust in police.
“It’s going to affect law enforcement across the country,” Smith told Fox 11 News. “I guarantee you that in the smallest of small towns people are watching this video and they’re questioning their police department.”
Smith says Green Bay officers are trained to re-evaluate the use of force constantly and to only use the force required to overcome resistance.
Floyd died after a Minneapolis Police Officer knelt down on his neck while arresting him over an allegedly forgery.
His death sparked riots and protests in Minneapolis.
