OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – One Northeast Wisconsin hospital is celebrating a so far successful treatment of a patient with COVID-19.
Ascension NE Wisconsin – Mercy Campus in Oshkosh released video of a patient being discharged on Tuesday. The video shows hospital staff members lining the halls and applauding as the man is wheeled out.
At the patient’s request, the hospital did not release his name.
Hospital officials say the man was admitted on March 25 and tested positive for COVID-19. His condition declined rapidly and he spent 11 days on a ventilator in the COVID intensive care unit.
In early April, he began to show signs of improvement and was taken off the ventilator April 6. Three days later, he was moved out of the COVID unit to work with physical, occupational and speech therapists to continue his recovery.
Although he has been discharged, the patient will continue to receive antibiotic treatment at home and will have virtual follow-ups with health care professionals.
According to Johns Hopkins University & Medicine, more than 500,000 people worldwide have recovered from COVID-19. In the U.S., the number is more than 51,000.
