FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The City of Fond du Lac now allows police to fine children as young as 12 for violating Wisconsin’s “safer at home” order.
Police Chief William Lamb says the ordinance was adopted this week. Fines for first-time offenses for children ages 12 and 13 are $90, for children 14-16 they are $187 and for those 17 and older, fines start at $313. Parents and guardians can also be cited in certain circumstances.
Lamb says the fines are an alternative to filing criminal charges through the Fond du Lac County District Attorney’s Office.
“We will continue to try to use an education first approach with violations of this Emergency Public Health Order when it’s appropriate,” Lamb wrote in a letter to the community, explaining that officers will not automatically write tickets to those gathering in groups.
Examples of prohibited activities include using playgrounds; using sports, play or recreational equipment such as basketball courts; “cruising” and “hanging out” with friends; and group gatherings including parties and cookouts.
