SHAWANO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A second popular location for viewing sturgeon spawning will be off-limits to the public during the coronavirus pandemic.
The City of Shawano says it will close Sturgeon Park effective April 9. The closure is to comply with prohibitions of gatherings of 10 or more people, as well as social distancing guidelines that people remain six feet apart.
“While we understand the tradition of viewing this unique event is one that many of our residents and visitors look forward to every year, our number one priority is the health and safety of everyone,” the city said in a statement.
The city also says the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources will not be tagging sturgeon at Sturgeon Park. Instead, DNR employees will be there to monitor activity and ensure the safety and well-being of the fish.
The city plans to post updates on spawning activity, as well as the reopening of the park on social media.
The city is also planning to set up its sturgeon cam in the next week. It will be available on the city’s website.
Bamboo Bend in Shiocton, another popular spot to view sturgeon spawning on the Wolf River, is also closed this year.
