GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Green Bay Mayor Eric Genrich says he’s disappointed the city’s lawsuit was thrown out to halt in-person voting on April 7th.
Judge William Griesbach dismissed the case Friday for lack of jurisdiction.
Genrich tells FOX 11 he’ll keep an eye on a similar federal effort in the state’s western district, but the city will also keep preparing as if in-person voting will happen in ten days.
“I’ve been in communication with our city clerk throughout the weekend here, trying to figure out how best to move forward with the election and trying to implement as many public health safeguards as possible.”
Governor Tony Evers has asked the legislature to take action so an absentee ballot is mailed to every registered voter in the state. Top state Republican lawmakers have already called the request impossible.
Genrich has been in support of a mail-in election, but says more time is likely needed to make it happen. He says the city does not currently have enough ballots to send one to every registered voter.
“As part of our case, we asked for an extension of the election essentially because we recognize how difficult it would be to handle all of that in a short period of time.”
The city wanted the election moved to June 2nd, lining up with other states who moved their elections amid the coronavirus pandemic.
