APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Rachel Richards isn’t like many teachers in Wisconsin right now.
She got in her car and saw her students on Monday, but it wasn’t from inside a classroom.
“My heart’s already racing thinking about it because we didn’t really get a chance to say goodbye to them,” Richards said.
She joined several other Appleton teachers in a drive-by parade, organized to see their students while classes are canceled to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
But students like Akash tells FOX 11 it just isn’t the same.
“I think it was good and I really liked it but I’m still kind of sad because we don’t get too see them that often.”
“This is really important,” said Allison Luedtke. “We just want them to know that we’re thinking about them and we really do miss them. I’m sad every afternoon when I’m working from home. I’d rather be in the classroom with them than behind the computer.”
Luedtke is a 5th grade teacher at Highlands Elementary School.
She says even though teachers like herself can’t be with their students during this time, Monday’s parade made them feel just a little bit closer.
