GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — The 740-foot “Algoma Conveyor” hopes to be freed soon from the Bay of Green Bay after running aground last Thursday–something Port of Green Bay Director Dean Haen says he’s never seen before in his 21 years with the port.
“The ship lost power, lost propulsion, lost steerage, and went out of the channel,” Haen said Tuesday.
Crews in collaboration with the US Coast Guard have been unloading the ship in hopes it will refloat. That’s a process that started this week, but so far, they haven’t had any success.
“Efforts have been underway to lighten the load to free it, but that has been unsuccessful,” Haen said. “They’re going to resume [on Wednesday] and take additional product off of it.”
The stuck ship hasn’t caused any other issues for the port.
“The shipping lane is partially blocked, but there is sufficient width for other vessels to pass,” said Haen.
The 16 crew members are safe on board the ship.
