FLORENCE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The former Long Lake town clerk was sentenced to 18 months in prison for stealing $210,466.61 from the town – five times the amount she was originally accused of taking.
Megan Wilder, 39, previously pleaded guilty to two counts of theft in a business setting. She was also placed on extended supervision for three years, probation for five years, and must perform 200 hours of community service, court records show.
Restitution of $50,000 was due today, plus she must pay $500 per month after her release.
According to the criminal complaint, she was elected in December 2016, and starting three months later, she used town credit cards for personal use. Those include two “large” truck payments, clothes for her kids, craft supplies and other items.
When the criminal complaint was filed in August, it stated the amount of money taken was at least $42,829.45. The amounts improperly paid by the town that either Wilder admitted to or investigators believe were suspicious totaled $16,488.11 in 2018, and $26,341.34 in 2019.
Wilder resigned from her position in August 2019.
