APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Spring Break plans could be on hold for students at Lawrence University in Appleton, as many take steps to protect themselves from the coronavirus.
“I’m from China and the situation there is so serious, so I decided to cancel my plans and just stay here at the dorms,” said student Xiru Yu.
For those who still plan to travel during spring break next week, the university has put together a list of guidelines to follow before students can return.”We are forbidding any international traveling to level 3 countries, the CDC has issued that guidance. We are also asking any staff or students traveling to a level 2 or 3 to self-isolate for two weeks before returning to campus,” said Associate Vice President of Communications, Megan Scott.
To accommodate students who are affected by the travel guidelines, Lawrence decided to keep its dorms open for students, free of charge.
“The health and safety of our campus community and surrounding community is our top priority, so we are taking this very seriously and meeting as often as we can,” she added.
The University’s Crisis Management Team and Communications Department are keeping students notified of any changes with the virus, and what they can do to stay safe.
“I think they’re playing it safe and not like kicking students off-campus and not doing remote classes like other universities,” said student Rishi Sanyal. “But I think they’re taking good precautions and updating the students as they go.”
As of Wednesday, Lawrence University has not made plans to cancel any classes for the student following spring break, but plans to monitor the situation closely.
The university has canceled a school-sponsored trip to Northern California, due to community spread of the virus in that area.
No other student events or trips have been canceled at this time.
