GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – As the 2020 election cycle continues to heat up – campaigns are making calls to build support for their candidates. But not all of the calls coming through are legitimate.
Most people have dealt with the dreaded experience of receiving calls from candidates on either side of the aisle. And while those calls can be automated, it is legal.
“Because 2020 is an election year, we have to keep in mind that recorded messages regarding candidates running for office – or for charities – are allowed,” says Lisa Schiller of the Better Business Bureau.
Many will then ask how to differentiate between a real campaign call and someone who may be trying to pull off a scam.
“It sounds just like one of the presidential candidates, and according to the recording – rivals have been raising a lot of money. They say if you want to see your favorite candidate win, you need to donate money immediately,” Schiller tells WTAQ News, “If it’s just a campaign call, it’s probably just a recorded message. But if it’s a scammer that is actually trying to get money or information from you – you’ll probably be asked to make a donation within that robocall or press buttons.”
It’s recommended to screen any call you may receive. If you don’t recognize the number, simply let it go to voicemail. If it’s someone important, they will leave a message.
