MILWAUKEE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – It’s a somber day in Milwaukee after a gunman killed 5 employees, and later himself at Miller Brewery.
“We’re on the scene of another American tragedy. Another senseless American tragedy. One that shouldn’t have to happen and unfortunately it’s in our backyard,” Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes said.
The city is trying to come to terms with the mass shooting and remember those who have lost their lives.
Just minutes away from Miller Brewery, employees gathered in Spitfire’s.
Andrew Peterson is the owner and tells FOX 11 he has friends that work at Miller.
“They didn’t have jackets, keys for their houses, their cars, most of them didn’t have money. We said that’s no condition, come on down we’ll give you guys some drinks, soda, water, put some food up for them. We just wanted to make sure they were taken care of. A lot of them are regular customers.”
While Peterson’s friends are okay, he knows they need support.
“Most of my friends are okay but it’s their friends that will be on the news and their friends are the ones that passed away so I want to make sure they have a place to feel comforted.”
Carl Sgray lives near Miller Valley and saw police rush to the scene.
“I just started seeing police, ambulance and firemen. I said wow where is all this traffic going to.”
Soon enough, he knew. And tells FOX 11 it’s hard for him to wrap his head around.
“We all live in this community together, we all live in this state together. It’s just way too tragic. It’s too much going on here.”
One thing is clear: The community is here for those affected by this tragedy.
