KAUKAUNA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Local Republican lawmakers say they have plans to provide major tax cuts.
Assembly Majority Leader Jim Steineke (R-Kaukauna) along with Representative Mike Rohrkaste (R-Neenah), Representative Shae Sortwell (R-Two Rivers) and Representative Gary Tauchen (R-Bonduel) talked on the tax cut package Friday at Team Industries in Kaukauna.
Lawmakers say they plan to vote next week on a $400 million tax cut proposal which will reduce middle income taxes by $250 million.
Republicans also say it cuts the personal property tax paid by businesses by nearly $45 million and reduces state debt by $100 million. It will also increase the state’s rainy day fund to $950 million.
Lawmakers say individual tax filers should expect to see a $105 reduction.
According to the Associated Press, Republicans are using some of the state’s projected $620 million budget surplus to pay for the tax cuts.
The announcement comes after Gov. Evers announced a proposal to spend a projected multi-million dollar surplus on K-12 education.
Evers signed an executive order to bring the legislature into session on Feb. 11 to discuss the proposal, which was rejected.
In response to Friday’s proposal, Gov. Evers’ office released the following statement:
“The governor’s education plan provides an opportunity for Assembly Republicans to deliver on their promise to get to two-thirds funding for our schools before they take an eight-month vacation while still providing $130 million to help reduce property taxes across our state. Unfortunately, Assembly Republicans made it clear today that they would rather break their promise to the people of our state than work together on funding our schools and reducing property taxes in Wisconsin.”
