NEENAH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – From Neenah, to Wuhan, to California, it’s been quite a journey for Daisy, Abigail and Adalynn Roth.
They’ve spent most of their journey cooped up inside. Daisy and her children went to visit family in China for the Lunar New Year.
Days after landing in Wuhan, Daisy Roth tells FOX 11 the city went into lock down because of the coronavirus outbreak.
“We could go out to the grocery store but because we have an infant, so we’re trying to be really cautious not going out as much. So my kids, they haven’t been out since they got to Wuhan, since the 23rd.”.
She says it was difficult for Abigail to understand why they couldn’t leave the Wuhan apartment.
“My older one definitely knew something was not right. It was nothing she had experienced before. Her idea of a virus is ‘oh I just wash my hands afterwards’ and she’ll be okay.”
After weeks in lock down, Daisy and the girls were able to get on a U.S. chartered flight.
Daisy said one child on the flight had a fever. That family sat apart from others in a section covered in plastic.
According to Daisy, those people were tested for coronavirus and the results were negative.
Now Daisy and her daughters are at Travis Air Force Base in California. The Department of Homeland Security declared mandatory quarantine for people who have been in Wuhan.
The girls are thrilled to be outside again.
“Every day about 1 o’clock they have outdoor activities for the kids to do. So my daughter just went to play soccer and she made some friends,” Daisy said.
Daisy said everyone is being monitored closely.
“They check our temperature twice a day. One in the morning one in the afternoon. They ask you how do you feel? Do you have any symptoms?”
She said this ordeal was unexpected, but she’s grateful.
“Here they treat us really nicely. They really prepare a lot of stuff to help the kids get through this tough time.”
Daisy said they’re doing what they can to keep the community safe.
“We’re trying to do the best we can, stay here, make sure we’re okay, not carrying any virus out.”
The family is excited to go home. Daisy expects to be in quarantine until February 18th.
Her husband plans to pick them up from California whenever they’re able to leave.
