MADISON, WI (WHBL) — With one week until Wisconsin’s Spring Primary the Wisconsin Department of Transportation reminds you that you’ll need a valid ID in order to vote, and they’ll help you get one if you don’t have it.
There’s no separate “voter ID,” and most Wisconsin voters will use their Wisconsin driver’s license. If you don’t have an ID then you should stop at the nearest DMV office to get a free Wisconsin ID that’s valid for voting. You’ll need certain documents, such as a birth certificate, proof of identity and of Wisconsin residency. If you can’t get everything needed, then the ID Petition Process can be used to get a receipt that will allow you to vote while you locate the remaining documents.
The first stop for voters looking to get their first Wisconsin ID should be the Wisconsin Department of Transportation Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website at wisconsindmv.gov/idcards.
DMV’s toll-free voter ID hotline at (844) 588-1069 is available for questions on obtaining an ID to vote.
Questions regarding voter eligibility, poll locations, voter registration information or other election information can be directed to the Wisconsin Elections Commission http://elections.wi.gov/.
