GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – The numbers are back from the Green Bay Police Departments School Zone enforcement operation last month, part of the department’s “Slow Down, Green Bay” initiative, and they’re not looking good.
“When it was all completed, we came up with 58 traffic citations and 28 written warnings,” Police Commander Kevin Warych told WTAQ. “Of that total, 37 citations and 17 written warnings were for speeding alone.”
The department had announced the special enforcement effort on January 30th a week ahead of time. Warych said that didn’t seem to deter school zone speeders.
“These [totals] are pretty shocking,” Warych said. “We want people to know to just slow down, especially in school zones. It’s putting people at risk.”
A fatal accident in Waushara county, where a 6-year-old girl was fatally struck by a car that ignored a school bus warning light, underscores the need for safety in and around school zones and places where children are present.
“We don’t want that to happen in Green Bay,” Warych said. “We need people to slow down and be conscious of their surroundings.”
It won’t be the last time police step up enforcement around those school zones this year.
Nine officers patrolled around some of the city’s school zones during the six-hour deployment.
Police report a single driver was also arrested for operating while impaired, suspected of illegal drug use.
