BROWN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Sunday’s storm brought heavy snowfall most of the day, making for slippery roads and difficult driving conditions.
The Brown County Sheriff’s office said they responded to 47 snow-related incidents just between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Outagamie County reported a dozen in the same time frame.
The snow may have looked peaceful if you were watching through your window, but Lt John Bain, with the Brown County Sheriff’s office, tells FOX 11 it can be anything but when you have somewhere to be.
“The roads in Brown County have been steadily deteriorating as the day goes by. They started out not too bad but traffic has increased through the day and roads have definitely deteriorated.”
Bain says the sheriff’s office did what it could to keep up with the calls.
“We did call in extra officers today due to the increase in call volume related to the crashes.”
Bain said it’s a mixture of conditions that lead to more crashes during a snowstorm.
“Visibility has been somewhat limited today but by far the biggest thing is the snow is slippery. It increases the stopping distance. Makes it difficult for people to stop in general and steer.”
Bad road conditions in February may be a little reminiscent of last February. The 24th of this month will be one year since the 131 car pile-up on Interstate 41 in the Fox Valley that injured dozens and killed one person.
A reminder that winter isn’t over and to slow down when it’s snowing.
Many departments throughout Northeast Wisconsin issued tow bans and winter weather advisories Sunday.
