LAKE WINNEBAGO (WTAQ-WLUK) — The spearers are out on the lake as the sturgeon season opens Saturday.
Scott Broehm and his group started cutting into the ice Friday, and they say things aren’t so bad out on the lake.
“The biggest thing is safety this year. You have to be safe. If you don’t have to drive vehicles out, it’s probably not a good idea,” said Scott Broehm of Stockbridge.
Consistent, below-freezing temps this week have improved ice conditions.
“We have real good dark ice here cutting. The top is nice and firm, so it’s good ice. You still got to use common sense when you’re out here,” said Broehm.
Clarity, too, is good.
“I can see 13 feet here okay. So that’s pretty good. Might have a fish this year,” said Bob Herwig of Appleton.
Experts say spearers typically need 12 feet of clear water to be successful. The season runs for 16 days or until the safe-harvest cap is reached.
