GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – While some state lawmakers have tried to limit early and absentee voting in Wisconsin, the city of Green Bay is working to expand voting opportunities for residents.
“These efforts to shrink the early in-person absentee voting period disenfranchise people because not everyone is available on a Tuesday between 8 and 7,” said Cheif of Staff Celestine Jeffreys.
Jeffreys tells FOX 11 Green Bay voters now have the option to cast their in-person absentee ballot during extended evening hours on weekdays and on Saturdays from 10 to 4 p.m.
“This is wonderful because we want to make sure it’s available to everyone working for every shift. Unfortunately, we only have one absentee ballot polling location in Green Bay and that is the clerk’s office.”.
Jeffreys said the voter turnout in Green Bay has been pretty consistent over the years, but as lawmakers continue to change voting rules the city is working hard to keep residents educated
“A year and half ago we sent information in the water bills to inform people about voting early and absentee and where and how to register. Here in Wisconsin we have same-day registration, very important and people do need a photo ID and proof of address.”
The city plans to offer the same extended hours for the April and November elections.
